Note: BIOGRAPHY: Married Lena Ponzar on 27 January, 1909. Witnesses at the wedding were Henry's brother, William Becker and his wife, Lydia Kramer Becker.
How Henry Becker and Lena Ponzar began courting, as told to Henry Lau by Lena Ponzar. About 1960.
According to Grandma, she met Grandpa at a barn dance. She had gone with some of her brothers, he with Louis Wambsganz. Grandpa was working for Louis' father on a neighboring farm and Louis was married to Grandma's sister, Bertha. Grandpa bet Louis a new hat that he could get Grandma to let him walk her home from the dance. He told Grandma about the bet and that he could not afford a new hat, so she took pity on him and let him walk her home. "And", she said, "that's how the whole damned thing started."

Note: BIOGRAPHY: Relationship is confirmed by 1920 census where she is living with Peter Becker and listed as Dora Benzle, age 78, born in Germany, and sister to Peter. She is also listed as Dorothea Becker daughter of Charles and Philipine Becker in 1850 census, age 8, born in Germany. In the 1900 cenus, she is living with husband Jacob and the children listed herein . In contradiction to this, she lists her and her parents birthplace as Switzerland in the 1900 census, and the year of her immigration as 1870. The children listed in the 1900 census were born between 1887 and 1896. It seems rather odd that Dora was aged 45 to 54 at the birth of her children. Were these grandchildren living with her? Can't find family in 1880 census (n.b.). A millitary pension record (A.com) shows a Jakob Boentzle, Dora Boentzle his widow in 190?. The 1910 (ED 110, image 27) census lists her as living on Telegraph Road, widowed, age 70, and having had 5 children, all living. Also a marriage record from the IGI shows a marriage between Jakob Boenzle and Dorothea Becker on 20 Feburary 1870 at the Zoar Church, Hanover, Jo Daviess County, Illinois.
